Saturday, August 7: PMC Day 1 - Sturbridge to Bourne MA -
112 miles
Breakfast, 5:30A The
prior evening, this room was configured as a theater-in-the-round for the
opening ceremonies. The volunteers do some amazing things overnight, both
here and on Saturday night at Mass Maritime Academy. Here's
the view from the pack, with the national anthem being sung from the small
lift to the right. That's Billy Starr, the founder of the PMC, holding the
flag. Sutton Waterstop,
7:30A Carl's
on the phone, waiting for our live interview on NECN
to start at 7:39A. Pay no attention to the men facing the woods in the
background... Jefferson School Waterstop, Franklin Somehow,
the PMC volunteers manage to give out food and fluids to hundreds of riders
at a time for several hours straight. Cherry Street, Wrentham Here's
the entrance to the most enthusiastic street on the route. The neighbors block off auto traffic at both ends to make the
best possible environment for the riders. Note the red ribbons, flags and
banner. Piping the riders up the hill The
piper moved this year, to a hill about half way through the ride. Lunch Stop - Dighton/Rehobeth Regional High School Relaxing
over sandwiches and drinks, just in front of the DJ booth. Kids
like this definitely get you up the hills. The "Over the Hill
Cheerleaders" in their Saturday outfits You
never know where you'll find them, but you always know they'll be great. Mass Maritime Academy Entrance Carl
rolls into the final turn to the day's finish. We were a little later than we
had planned, but had done two interviews along the way (NECN and WBZ), which
took some time. The
last 50 yards of the last 100-mile day of our ride. TS Enterprise Our
home for the night. No, not the port-o-lets, the ship! Under the food tent Here
we are with Carl's daughter Audrey, who was able to sneak into MMA (don't try
this yourself, unless you're this cute) Unique Recumbent Reportedly,
the man who rides this plays a trumpet as he rolls into the finish line The Huckleberry Team Photo We
were invited to join, in spite of our penchant for falling behind. PMC
